Her mother educated her at home, introducing Rosemary to Celtic and Saxon legends, Icelandic sagas, fairy-tales and the work of Rudyard Kipling. She was left severely physically disabled by Stills disease - a form of juvenile arthritis - which led to many stays in hospital for painful remedial operations. She moved around frequently, living in Streatham, London, Chatham Dockyard, Sheerness Dockyard and North Devon.
